Volume III: Biographies
Thanhouser Career Synopsis: John Reinhard was an actor with Thanhouser in 1914 and 1915 and appeared in many films.
Biographical Notes: John Reinhard (an anglicization of Reinhardt, his family name) followed a stage career under the management of Lew Fields, the Shubert organization, Florenz Ziegfeld, Cohan and Harris, and others and appeared in The Wizard of Oz, It Happened in Nordland, About Town, The Girl Behind the Counter, Algeria, Miss Innocence, and other plays. He was in the original "Madam Sherry" production of The Follies, in which he made famous the song, Every Little Moment. For two years he played on the Orpheum Circuit.
John Reinhard was in films with Thanhouser in 1914 and 1915. A note in the August 28, 1915 issue of Reel Life told of his activities after he left Thanhouser: "John Reinhard came to the Gaumont Company from the Thanhouser studios. Eighty multi-reel pictures stand to his credit in the annals of New Rochelle, where he specialized in heavy parts and worked up a screen method which, today, places him in the foremost ranks of motion-picture stars." The September 4, 1915 issue of the same publication gave a different figure: "John Reinhard...enjoys the distinction of having played in eight multiple-reel subjects produced at the Thanhouser studios." In the summer of 1915 the actor was in films with Gaumont's Knickerbocker Star Features and had completed Capital Punishment. In 1916 he was in numerous Gaumont films, and in 1918 Reinhard was in Eye for Eye (Nazimova Productions for Metro).
Notes: His name often appeared as "Reinhart," "Rhinehart", or, especially, "Reinhardt" in publicity, including official releases. The latter was his family name, although he preferred to be known as Reinhard during his Thanhouser tenure. Do not confuse the Thanhouser actor with John Reinhardt (1901-1953), who was in films in the 1920s and 1930s.
