Volume III: Biographies
Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Arthur Hoyt was an actor with Thanhouser in 1914.
Biographical Notes: Arthur Hoyt was born in the silver mining camp of Georgetown, Colorado, on March 19, 1874. Early in his career he was on the stage as an actor and director, spending some 16 years with Liebler, H.W. Savage, Hunter Bradford Players, and other companies. His introduction to the footlights came when an uncle, who was the dramatic editor of a Cleveland newspaper, gave him letters of recommendation. George Tyler signed Hoyt for $10 per week to play 10 different roles in a play, a role which kept him busy running to and from the dressing room.
In motion pictures he acted for several firms, including Universal, where he launched his film career, Lasky, and Triangle. He acted in hundreds of films over the years, with representative early titles including The Lash, Little Partner, The Man Who Took a Chance, The Show Down, Broadway Arizona, Bringing Home Father, and Polly Ann. Apparently, he was with Thanhouser for just a brief time. In 1916 he relocated from the East to California, where he spent the balance of his life.
The 1918 edition of the Motion Picture Studio Directory noted that at the time he was a casting director and comedian. He was 5'6" tall, weighed 133 pounds, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. His home address was care of the Los Angeles Athletic Club, and his studio address was care of Triangle in Culver City, California. Arthur Hoyt appeared in dozens of later films with various companies and continued his career through the late 1940s. His death occurred in the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California on January 4, 1953.
