STERLING, Joseph *

Actor (1913)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Joseph Sterling was an actor with Thanhouser in 1913.

Biographical Notes: Born in 1892, Joseph Sterling was on the stage for six years before entering films. On the stage he was also known as J. Warren Sterling and Warren Sterling. For a time he was stage manager at Henry Miller's Theatre in New York. Around 1920 he was in the road show of Friendly Enemies. In the 1920s, under the name of Warren Sterling, he was seen in Sex, a play written by Jane Mast (pseudonym of Mae West, who also had the title role of Margie LaMont). In the early 1920s Warren Sterling rehearsed for Abie's Irish Rose, resigned before it opened, then rejoined the company. Six years later he did the same thing with Diamond Lil. In the 1920s he was also seen in The Farewell Curse, The Gilded Cage, and Savitri, or Love Conquers Death.

Joseph Sterling's screen career included playing character parts for Terriss (My Country First), Famous Players (The Sign of the Cross), and Thanhouser (Robin Hood). It is apparent that he was with Thanhouser for just a short time. A 1916 directory noted that Joseph Sterling was 5'9" tall, weighed 150 pounds, and had dark curly hair and dark eyes. His home address was 875 Hunt's Point Drive, Bronx, New York, and he was represented by the Amalgamated Photoplay Service (220 West 42nd Street, New York City). For recreation he enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, and dancing.
