Volume III: Biographies
Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Alexander H. Davis was a cameraman at the Thanhouser studio in New Rochelle in 1912 and 1913.
Biographical Notes: In January 1913 Alexander H. Davis sent photographs of the studio fire to Carl Louis Gregory, Thanhouser's chief cameraman, who was in California at the time. New Rochelle city directories of 1912 and 1913 list his home address as 212 Main Street. In the latter year he maintained a photographic business at 7 Rose Street.
Note: The Thanhouser cameraman has the same name as a son of Albert H. Davis, born in London, who came to America at the age of five and who died at his home at 936 East 12th Street, Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 80, on April 22, 1942. Surviving him were his wife, Rebecca Rosenthal Davis; two sons, Alexander and Emanuel; and a brother, Isaac. Albert H. Davis was a well known show card and scenery painter and, especially, a collector of stage and film photographs. In 1956 his collection, said to number approximately 250,000 items, was purchased by a foundation and presented to the University of Texas in Austin.
