Thanhouser Career Synopsis: George M. Marlo appeared in various Thanhouser films during the 1915-1917 period.
Biographical Notes: Born in New York City and educated there, George Marlo spent six years in legitimate and stock stage productions, later going into films about 1912, playing juvenile leads. In 1914 he survived the wreck of the ill-fated Munroe, a ship on which many died. George M. Marlo worked with Marion Leonard Films, Victor-Universal, Humanology Films, and Reliance (where he was in late 1914 and early 1915). On Tuesday, July 27, 1915 he reported for his first day of work at the Thanhouser studio in New Rochelle. He appeared in Thanhouser films through 1917.
His height was 5'7", his weight was 145 pounds, and he had dark hair and dark brown eyes. In 1916 George Marlo lived in Larchmont, New York, belonged to the Friars, Screen, and Larchmont Tennis clubs, and enjoyed athletic activities, including horseback riding and swimming. After the closing of Thanhouser, Marlo went with Universal, where he acted in the 1917 release of The Brand of Hate, after which he joined the Clara Kimball Young Film Corporation. In November 1917 he appeared in the Clara Kimball Young release of Magda. In 1918 he was in the United States military service, where he served as chauffeur to General John Pershing.
After the war, Marlo was seen for a time in vaudeville, then he became manger of the Yacht Club, an after-hours entertainment spot. He joined DeSylva, Brown & Henderson and soon became general manager of the firm. In 1931 he established Marlo Music. His song, Home, was popular beginning with its introduction on the airwaves on Thanksgiving Eve 1931. Later, he worked with Chappell, the Contact Men's Union, BMI, and Tommy Dorsey's publishing division, after which he operated a carwash. He then returned to BMI and remained there until his death at the French Hospital, New York City, on February 5, 1970.
Note: His surname was often misspelled, examples being "Merlo," "Marl," "Marlow," "Marlowe," and "Mario."
