Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Harry D. Southard was an actor with Thanhouser at one time, according to studio directories.
Biographical Notes: Born in Buffalo, New York in 1886 (or 1881, accounts differ), Harry D. Southard was educated at the Riverview Military Academy and Cornell University. After college, he entered the oil business, but he subsequently turned to the stage. He played in repertory and comic opera under the management of Klaw & Erlanger, William A. Brady, Selwyn, and others, taking leading parts in Little Women, Within the Law, The Girl and the Pennant, and other productions.
Harry D. Southard entered films in 1911 and subsequently was with a number of firms, including Reliance, Thanhouser, Kalem, Pathé (2nd episode of The Grip of Evil; Gentleman Joe, etc.), Photo Drama (Folks from Way Down East), Universal (That Lass o' Lowries, Secret Love, etc.), Balboa (Shadows, etc.), and others through the late 1920s. In 1916 his home address was 407 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, California. In 1917 and 1918 he lived at 601 West 136th Street, New York City. He was 5'10" tall, weighed 168 pounds (in 1918), and had dark hair and eyes. His favorite sports were baseball and football. In later years the actor was seen on stage in several productions in New York City, including Biography at the Theatre Guild in 1933 and Crime and Punishment in 1935. Harry D. Southard died on April 27, 1939 in New York.
