Volume III: Biographies

REY, Adele *

a.k.a. "Miss Beautiful"

Actress (1913-1914)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Miss Rey was the screen name of Evelyn Prevost, a society girl, reportedly a cousin of Mrs. John Jacob Astor, who appeared in various Thanhouser films in 1913 and 1914. (Refer also to the biographical entry under Miss Beautiful.)

Biographical Notes: Early in 1914, the mysterious "Miss Beautiful" appeared in Thanhouser pictures, amid publicity that she did not want to have her picture appear in print (but only on the screen). The June 27, 1914 issue of Reel Life revealed her identity as Adele Rey. Thus, "Miss Beautiful" was a pseudonym for Adele Rey which in turn was a pseudonym for Evelyn Prevost. Under the name of Adele Rey she appeared in several Pathé films in early 1913, before going to Thanhouser.

An article in Town & Country magazine, May 23, 1914, noted: "One of the many pretty girls who have deserted the legitimate stage to contribute to the thrills and sobs of the motion picture plays, Miss Rey has just finished a season of four months with the Thanhouser Motion Picture Company, where she was featured as Miss Beautiful, The Mystery Girl, and The Society Girl. She has also acquired the sobriquet of 'The Girl of the Air' because of her flights with well-known aviators. As a result of her fame in this connection she has recently been invited to visit Russia to fly for the Russian Aero Club. At present she contemplates taking part, during the latter part of June, in the trans-Atlantic trip which Lieutenant Porte will navigate and which Mr. Rodman Wanamaker is financing."

Note: Her surname was misspelled "Ray" in some publicity.
