Biographical Notes: Born in Utica, New York in 1878, Bert D. Carber (usually listed in publicity as B.D. Carber) was educated at St. Lawrence University. He followed a stage career with Frohman, Lew Fields, and Lillian Russell, and spent six years as a producer in stock. His motion picture career included employment with Kalem, Ramo, Universal (where he spent several years), and Thanhouser. From late 1915 until early 1917 he was with Thanhouser as a technical director.

The Moving Picture World, February 26, 1916, told of his arrival at Thanhouser : "B.D. Carber, who for so long held forth as technical director at the Universal, is now with Thanhouser at New Rochelle. Under Clarence Dull, the veteran stage chief, Carber will now supervise the planting of the sets, order the deck hands around, argue with the director and draw salary." In 1916 the New Rochelle city directory listed his home address as 74 Main Street. By March 1917 he had relocated to the Mutual studio in Glendale, New Jersey.
