HORNER, Violet *

Actress (1915)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Violet Horner appeared in the 1915 Falstaff release of Tillie the Terrible Typist.

Biographical Notes: Violet Horner was born in Obidos, Brazil, near the mouth of the Amazon River. Her father was an American civil engineer engaged in the construction of public works. The Horner family returned to the United States in 1909, after which time Violet was engaged as an actress on the stage in New York City. By 1911 Violet Horner was well known as a vocalist and had her own concert company in Brooklyn. Her sister Rose was also an actress.

According to an article in The Motion Picture Story Magazine, October 1913, Miss Horner's life "was not always a flowery one" and her father met with many reverses, after which "the beauty of his daughter Violet attracted attention, which resulted in her appearance in big Broadway musical comedies and legitimate dramas under some of the most prominent theatrical managers."

In the autumn of 1911 she entered films with Universal and had decided upon the screen as a career, despite many reported offers to return to the stage. Her 1912 Universal pictures included The Bridal Room, A Happy Family, and An Eventful Bargain Day. Miss Horner's dog, Toway, appeared in the last-named release. By the summer of 1913 she was with the Solax Company in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In November 1914 she appeared in the All Star for Alco Film five-reel picture, Shore Acres. In 1914 she was also seen in films released by Victor and Famous Players. In 1915, at which time she was in her early twenties, Violet Horner was with Thanhouser briefly and was seen in a Falstaff film. She was described as a blonde with a youthful appearance, with fair skin, and large eyes. Her pastimes included art, golf, swimming, and automobile touring.
