Volume III: Biographies
Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Charles F. Emerson, Jr. appeared in Thanhouser films from 1914 to 1917, including Falstaff comedies.
Biographical Notes: Charles F. Emerson, Jr., who often appeared in credits as Charlie Emerson, was a resident of New Rochelle. The city directory for 1911 listed his occupation as an actor, and his home at 262 Huguenot Street, where he remained through 1914, after which he relocated to Union Avenue. The New Rochelle Pioneer, June 3, 1916, stated that he was among nearly two dozen Thanhouser players, directors, and cameramen whose employment was terminated by the studio on Saturday morning, May 27, 1916, at a time when the outlook for the Thanhouser Film Corporation was dim. However, he appeared in at least one Thanhouser film made after that date, so he was probably rehired on a project basis.
Note: The Thanhouser player is probably a different person from Charles Emerson, born in England with the surname of Tindall, who died in Toronto on December 10, 1959, at the age of 70. At that time Emerson was manager of the dramatic studios of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and had been employed by that organization for the preceding 21 years. Earlier he was on stage in the United States and Canada in Vaughan Glaser's stock company. The Canadian Charles Emerson was survived by his wife and two sons.
