MARSHALL, Thomas Riley *

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Thomas Riley Marshall, vice president of the United States, appeared briefly in a Thanhouser film.

Biographical Notes: Thomas Riley Marshall was born in North Manchester, Indiana in 1854. He graduated from Wabash College in 1873, was admitted to the bar two years later, and for many years thereafter practiced in Columbia City, Indiana. A staunch Democrat, he was elected governor of the state in 1908. In 1912 he was nominated as Woodrow Wilson's vice-president and was elected the same year, and re-elected in 1916. A good-natured, humorous, and very popular man, he is remembered for his saying, "What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar." In 1914, while he was vice-president, he appeared with certain other government officials in a segment of Episode 21 of The Million Dollar Mystery. His reminiscences were published in an autobiographical book: Thomas R. Marshall, a Hoosier Salad. Marshall died in Washington, D.C. in 1925.
