Volume III: Biographies

HAUCK, Roy *

Actor (1913-1916)

Thanhouser Career Synopsis: Roy Hauck was a juvenile actor with Thanhouser during the 1913-1916 era.

Biographical Notes: Roy Hauck was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hauck, the latter being fire commissioner in New Rochelle at one time. In an article describing the Thanhouser ball held in January 1914 to observe the first anniversary of the January 13, 1913 studio fire, Roy Hauck was described by a reporter as a "boy comedian." He worked intermittently with Thanhouser over a period of years and was seen in juvenile roles.

The Moving Picture World, June 17, 1916, furnished a biographical sketch: "As a youth of many and varied attainments, first on the stage and more recently on the screen, Roy Hauck, aged 15 years, has an enviable record. He comes by his accomplishments naturally. On his mother's side he is connected with a number of prominent actors and actresses, among them Bessie McCoy (Mrs. Richard Harding Davis), whereas the other branch of the family included Minnie Hauck, an important figure in grand opera for many years. Having reached the age of seven, Roy made his first professional appearance at the Hippodrome and for about one year thereafter continued in stage productions, which he abandoned to play juvenile leads in Thanhouser pictures. The list of photoplays in which he has proved his ability in prominent roles includes Guilty or Not Guilty, Her Big Brother, Bobby's Plot [Ed. note: No Thanhouser film with this title has been located by the author], The Tin Soldier and the Dolls, A Gentleman for a Day, The Million Dollar Mystery, all Thanhouser productions; also the Arrow Corporation's Right Off the Bat and George Kleine's Gloria's Romance, starring Billie Burke.

"Weighing only 100 pounds and measuring five feet three inches, Roy scarcely looks like a boy of 15, although his training has developed a versatility that might be envied by a mature man. He can drive any kind of a machine, ride or drive a horse, and is an expert at swimming, high-diving, boxing, and acrobatic and fancy dancing. For the past two years he has been his own business manager and handled his contracts. At the close of a busy day Roy is accustomed to indulge a taste for music, for he is something of a pianist and with a repertory that runs all the way from grand opera to ragtime."
