Volume II: Filmography
Not issued; trade notice March 30, 1912
Length: 2 reels
Character: Drama
Director: George O. Nichols
Notes: 1. Apparently, production of this film was halted once it was learned that another Independent producer, Champion, was planning to produce the same subject for the screen. There was a mutual respect among various Independent producers, but not between Independents and members of the Licensed camp. Often Independents and Licensed firms would release the same subject, or a subject with a similar title, within a few weeks of each other. Occasionally two Independents would conflict with each other, as in the case of Thanhouser and Gem each releasing Under Two Flags at nearly the same time in July 1912, and The Woman in White at about the same time in October of the same year. 2. A different version of Carmen was released by Thanhouser on April 25, 1913.
ARTICLE, The Moving Picture News, March 16, 1912:
"The 'Thanhouser Classic' of Carmen is promised the Independent theatres soon. The subject was held back to allow Nicholas Nickleby to jump in during the Dickens' anniversary excitement and get the new Florida series moving. Carmen is in two reels, and some special advertising matter is being prepared for it." (This same notice appeared in The Billboard, March 23, 1912, The Morning Telegraph, March 17, 1912, and elsewhere.)
ARTICLE, The Moving Picture News, March 30, 1912:
"Learning that another Independent producer had made preparations to film Carmen, the Thanhouser Company states that it will not put out this subject as previously announced."
